How to know when it’s time to seed and aerate: 5 warning signs for North Carolina lawns.

1. It’s Fall or Spring

The first and easiest sign that it is time to aerate and seed your lawn in the Raleigh-Durham areas is pretty simple; It’s either spring or it’s fall!  The fall is usually the best time, but spring is also a good time to give your lawn the attention that it is crying for.  Aeration during the growing seasons will assist in nutrient absorption to the root system. During the growing seasons, the temperatures are warm, but not hot, which allows for growth without killing out new grass seed.

2. Lawn Thinning or Bare Spots

In Raleigh-Durham your lawn is bombarded by many elements that can thin and damage your lawn; insects, heat, sun, drought, and more! With that being said, one often overlooked characteristic of a thinning lawn may be compacted soil. Thin patches and slow growth may be indicators that their roots are unable to get the proper nutrients or absorb water.By aerating and seeding your lawn, you’ll be able to stop thinning grass and regain the grass density that you lost.

3. A Thick Layer of Thatch or Debris

If you closely inspect your thinning or unhealthy lawn you may spot thatch. Thatch is a living and dead organic matter between the grass or living vegetation (top) and the root system (bottom). If the thatch becomes too thick, then it can be detrimental for your lawn’s health by preventing moisture or air getting to the soli and root system. Aeration helps to decompose thatch at a faster rate.

4. Standing Water

Standing water on your lawn or is an indication of compacted soil. The more compacted the soil, the less likely the root system is getting the nutrients it needs. If you attempt to seed before addressing hard, compacted soil you might find your work and your money being washed away by the next rain storm.

5. Discolored Areas

This particular characteristic of an unhealthy lawn in need of seeding an aerating can be related to some of the items mentioned above. Yellow and brown grass is just a warning sign. Soil compaction is one of several reasons for discoloration in your yard. If you notice other warning signs in combination with yellow or brown areas, then it’s time to aerate and seed.
